The Discussion

I really wish that I could have gotten this promising device to work. The wireless LAN seemed to work fine; it picked up several wireless hotspots in my area.
I was never able to get the wireless gateway to work. I disabled all my firewalls, tried having windows assign IP address, tried assigning IP addresses manually, and even downgraded from Vista to XP SP3 to try to get this device to work. Every attempt failed.
I followed the (poorly translated) directions in the instruction booklet to the letter and even tried to find help on their website. If you go to windy31.com, you will see that there are tens of technical support questions on their forums but only 3 replies from customer support staff.
I wasted the better part of a weekend trying to get this thing to work.

This device serves as the wireless router for my home network and it works beautifully. Even better, I can take it with me when I travel and if I am at someone’s house who doesn’t have a wireless router, I just plug this into their USB and the auto-install has me online in one minute. Also, if you’re a business traveler, you can use this to share a single wireless access at the airport amongst multiple laptops. Finally, let me reiterate the most important feature: auto-install!

WOW
I used Windy 31 during business meeting with 5 other people. This is very clever gadget. My company bought 5 of them and used it for business travel. Works great!

The product documentation is awful and their website is useless showing customer questions that remain unanswered over a year later. However, running Winxp, I’ve found it works very well and installs easily THE FIRST TIME IT’S USED. (Sorry for the shouting). When I power down my machine, it quits working. Completely. The “solution” is to remove (uninstall in Control Panel) the program, unhook the device. Then plug it back in and let it re-install itself. Works great until the next power down. Then rinse and repeat I guess…

This product installs itself quickly (WinXP) and the signal is surprisingly strong. The only problem is the heat buildup quickly. Sometimes even leave plastic smell on my palm.
