I don’t want them to be able to use the internet, but they need to be able to access network drives. These computers have firefox on them, so just removing IE isn’t an option. Any ideas? maybe using the hosts file? Thanks!
EDIT: The solution MUST be free, and preferably within windows. Thanks!
Answer by Aaron
If this a windows xp professional OS, you can have the firewall block outgoing TCP port 80 and 443 to a public network. It can also be done through the router instead, but it would affect ALL users.
This will stop access to web servers that the web browsers use. Although it is still possible to still be able to use IM client. But with the right ports blocks assigned those can be blocked too.
Port numbers different between what IM client is being used.

I have Netgear DG834G router, but it doesn’t have a WAN port. It has 1 port for incoming ADSL line and 4 port LAN switch. My question is can I use my WAN cable on any 4 port to distribute internet in case the ADSL line is not working.
Answer by Alex H
Hi – I’ve had a look at your router on netgears website (http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/GWirelessRouters/DG834G.aspx ).
I think I understand what you want to achieve, however I can’t be 100% sure because the terminology you have used does not make complete sense in the context you have used it.
Your router has 1 port for the phone cable and 4 ports for network cables. The phone cable can not be plugged into any of the 4 ports for network cables. If you have a look closely at the phone cable and a network cable you’ll find that the phone cable is a little bit smaller than a network cable.
When you say your WAN cable I’m assuming that you are talking about the phone cable. So the simple answer is no you can’t plug what you call your WAN cable into one of the LAN ports.
Hope this helps

1: I used to be connected to a network called “Dickinson”(thats my last name) but suddenly im connected to an unsecure network called “Linksys”, and i’m getting extremly poor internet connection. I’m assuming that others are also using this network.
So what do I do? I tried to hit create a new network and put all the info in like passphrase and security password and etc but its not showing up when I want to connect.
How do I connect to my router thats downstairs? thats all i want to do really.
2: Would resetting my router(holding the reset button for 30 secs) force me to do a bunch of configuration to get my computer associated with the router again, or no? is it easy to get set back up after resetting it? thanks
My router is a linksys WRT54G btw
Answer by jon144au
if you reset the router, you lose all your configuration settings.
“Linksys” could be a neighbor’s router… that’s why its a slower connection.
goto Network and Sharing center, choose the connection, disconnect from it, search for other wireless connections, find “Dickinson” and Connect to it

Answer by Dingdingdong
Just connect the second computer to the hub and you should be good to go. Connecting meaning use a Ethernet cable. I think that is what your asking.
