I have a network configured for open access but my laptop will not connect, why? Can someone suggest some other settings I may want to look at. I had it connected before, and now it will not. I must have changed something. My laptop detect the network and displays it and says it is open access, but when I click connect it will never connect.
Answer by johntrottier
Try connecting with a cable. If that works, then secure your wireless and try again
If you can’t connect with the cable – RESET YOUR ROUTER
One of the reasons you DON’T run an unsecured wireless network is that any fairly knowledgeable person (he does not even have to have reached “hacker” level) can take over an unsecured router and make it their own.

Hello,
I have just installed broadband service on my computer. I have the high speed modem hooked to my wireless router, which then hooks into my PC. I also have a laptop that works fine off the router but I want the laptop and the PC to be networked. I use the wireless from the laptop and the wired on the PC. How do I set up this network, step by step? I would like to have print capabilities on the network as well as the ability to run programs on another computer. I am new to networking so if one can provide step by step info, that would be terrific.
Thanks alot,
Brian
Answer by T G
if your laptop gets on the internet, you are halfway there…
go to your network interface properties and click the box for file and print sharing on both computers… then go to your wired pc with the printer attached and right click the printer icon and choose sharing…check the box…click ok. go back to the laptop and in the start menu choose run then type the name of your wired pc after two backslashes ‘\[computername]‘ that will bring up a window with the shares of your wired pc…

I have set up the home network and shared the printer fine, then it just quit. It will print from desktop but not from laptop anymore. I have run all the troubleshooters I can find. The printer is shared and is selected as the default printer. I have tried deleting and reinstalling computer with no change. I have redownloaded drivers and rerun the setup wizard. Any advice would be appreciated!!
Answer by John D M B
Is the printer connected to the Desktop or to a router with a print server port?
If it is connected to a router with a built-in printserver, you may have to reset your router and run the setup again. Make sure you password the Admin account on the router.
If it is connected directly to your Desktop computer, removing the share; try un-installing it and reinstalling with the latest drivers for that printer and os. You will have to do the same with the laptop after finishing the desktop. Power off everything: Modem, Router, Hub (if you have one) Desktop, Laptop.
Power on the Modem first – wait untill the lights indicate proper connection.
Power on the Router – wait untill the lights indicate proper connection.
Power on the Hub (if you have one) – wait untill the lights indicate proper connection.
Power on the desktop and laptop. This usually fixes the problem.
If not:
Have you changed anything on the Desktop such as new programs, internet sharing, firewall, etc?
Some programs and Internet shares will change your settings and can prevent one or more computers from accessing shared devices.
Good Luck.

Answer by chezzrob
you have to network the two computers then using the vista computer explore to the xp and copy and paste to vista
you should get enough info out of this, set the xp hard drive to share, skip the router bit, set up the two wifi to find each other
in the vista, right click the lan/wifi icon and go through the tick boxes in the properties screen. Thats the lan/wifi icon in the networking folder section.
Set up Home network
===============
If you cannot find these locations search for them in windows help files
Click start >help and support.
Wire in all computers and network printer to the router using cat 5 cable from their Ethernet ports. Cat 5 is faster than wifi. Use blue or white cat 5 leads, do not use any leads that have red on them.
If you buy your router from your ISP there is a good chance they will set it up for you. Check your ISP website for contact number.
Your ISP has to connect the router to the internet.
Then on each computer:
1.Open My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View Tab >tick “use simple file sharing”
2.In My computer Right click the Hard Drive that you want to share >sharing and search > tick share the folder in network
3.On desktop screen select the my computer icon and right click the icon >properties >computer name tab > Change> bullet workgroup and type in WORKGROUP
4.In control panel category view >network and internet connections
a.select network connections > Find the LAN connection Icon >right click >enable
b.Find the Windows Firewall pop up (located in the LAN icon properties) >bullet Off ( disable any other firewall programs)
c.Find the LAN connection icon >right click >repair
d.In LAN connection properties pop up > Tick the four items in the main window > in properties screen for Internet Protocol >general tab >bullet two auto instructions
5.Using Explorer, expand My Network Places in the directory tree >select Workgroup > click on workgroup and what you can see in the results. This is your home network., you should see each computer that is in the Workgroup domain.
6.You can plug a network printer in the router and load the network printer drivers into each computer and each computer can access the same printer.
7.If you have a sensitive part of a computer that you do not want to share on the network, right click and un tick the sharing.. This can be the Hard drive, partition, folder or file.
8.You do not have to have sharing enabled on your computer to see others, you need sharing on Your computer enabled so others can see you.
9.After all computers are turned on and running, enable the firewall program you use on each computer.
10.Each computer will require their own antivirus and internet security programs.
11.Using the internet browser access the router (see router instructions) by typing in the IP address in the browser go bar.
12.Enable the routers wifi
13.on computers that You want to access the router’s wifi, boot up and run their wifi wizard to find the router
14.If you want to network the wifi computer you have to do the same from step 1 above to it.

When my mom lived with me we used a router to connect my computer to hers (because mine had wireless adapter on it) and it worked fine. My mom has since moved out and I have the router. My problem is I want to connect my laptop to the network, but it wants my security key which I can’t get since my mom’s computer is the “leader” and it is not connected to the network anymore.
Can I set up a new connection using the same router?
Answer by Gregory F
Yes as long as you have the installation disk for the modem, uninstall the modem then go through the install process and you may or not need to install the wireless.

ok so my mother brought an epc 7-inch mini laptop from ebay shipped from hong kong, at first the laptop wouldn’t connect to my router or network at all so i tried playing around with the settings a bit but nothing worked. then it started to connect by itself everytime i opened it but only for 5 minutes and then it kept on losing the connection, its really annoying and i don’t want my money to go to waste so please help!
Answer by Defender of Truth
Either the laptop itself is on its way out, or you need to update the driver/firmware for the network adapter on it.

On my desktop, the Network Authentication is WPA-PSK and the Data Encryption is TKIP. On the laptop the Network Auth is Open (only one other option Shared) and Data encryption is WEP (only one other option Disable). My desktop uses a Dell Wireless 1450 Wireless USB Adapter and the laptop uses Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series Wireless LAN Adapter.
What’s a Jumpdrive?
Answer by Pinky
if you’re using WPA-PSK, you have to change the settings on your laptop to the same settings, WPA-PSK from WEP. right click the connection->properties. or delete the connection and let it redetect it.
there’s a password for WPA-PSK. type it in your laptop when you change the type of authentication.

According to a 2007 study by the Ponemon Institute and Redemtech, 70% of data breaches result from the loss of “off-network” equipment. That is, equipment that’s not connected to the Internet. There are some other staggering numbers, but the point is that a huge percentage of data breaches are NOT “hackers” breaking into networks. They’re good old laptop thefts, basically. So which is more important to focus energies on (not that any aspect should be completely neglected): laptop security or network security?
Answer by Bill
Hello;
I think that given the statistics, laptop security is more important. My guess is that the reason the network security is more effective is because professionals are charged with keeping the network safe … the security of the laptop is left to the user.
Perhaps installing the Linux operating system on a laptop might make it more secure? The file systems are automatically password protected by the operating system.
Thanks for the info!

I have made a connection between my desktop and laptop via wifi. The desktop is connected to internet.I have shared internet from my desktop for the laptop and it works fine. The problem is that after every two or three days I am blocked by the ISP because of the IP address of the laptop on the network which is very different from the IP address ISP assigns. Please tell me a way of changing IP address of my laptop. Thanks in advance.
Answer by The Tech Guru
Yea go to control panel, then open up network connections and then right click your connection that is connected to the internet, and click properties. Then under the Generals tab click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and hit Properties. Then check the Use the Following IP address box, and type in the IP you want.
It will hae to be within range of your routers DHCP though.. so for more home routers it will have to be an ip like 192.168.1.1 through 192.168.1.50
so any ip between that should work for a normal home router on default settings..

I’ve got a laptop with 802.11n wireless, a desktop with gigabit ethernet and a dsl-g604t wireless adsl router with 4 ethernet ports. Can i use file and printer sharing by connecting the router to the desktop by cable, and the laptop through wireless, or would i only get internet?
Answer by Starrysky
Yes, you can have file and printer sharing using a cable to the desktop, and wireless to the laptop, and Internet on both machines as well. That is what routers do so well.

It is a Netopia 3546 router. I typed in the WEP key that is on the bottom of the router, but that is incorrect. I typed in all of the codes that are on the bottom of the router, but none of them work. The admin has forgotten the password to connect to ISP to recover the key. The other laptop asks for the network security key, but I cannot find it.
